Legislation on Laser and IPL treatment in Belgium for wine stains, pigment disorders, keloid scar correction, epilation…
The regulations for new techniques such as laser is a hot issue in dermatology. Beauty centers increasingly have device which can be used for medical indications
such as wine stains.
We are currently seeing an increase in litigation because of improper
cosmetic treatments in this sector. The legal framework is lacking
currently, there are only recommendations of the National Council of the belgian GMC (General Medical Council) and the Royal Academy of Medicine. Both institutions
have repeatedly stressed the impact of energy on the skin and the severity of potential side effects of laser or flash lamp treatments (IPL or intense
pulse light). For medical problems such as vascular abnormalities, pigment disorders, pathological scars, hirsutism, the treatment should be performed by a physician with appropriate expertise.
Epilation
Negocations are running rigidly , due to the political context (still no belgian government, and most ministers of health have no medical background).
Estheticians claim that in the past they always performed epilation but the devices have become much more powerful. In unskilled hands they may cause damage. Class IV lasers and flash lamps should only be used in the medical setting after proper training.
