Belgium leader organ donation surgery but still shortage of donors
According to the Department of Health, the number of organ donations in 2011 rose by 22%, but that's not enough to meet the demand.
The newspaper’ De Morgen’ writes that Belgium with 29.7 donors per million population is the worldwide leader.
One reason for this is that the Belgian law classifies everyone as a potential donor. Unless you actively unsubscribed, you are supposed to agreeing to organ donation. In other countries you actually have to agree beforehand. Nevertheless, there still is a shortage of organs, notes the RTBF , one of the national TV channels. The most acute shortage is that of kidneys, with 837 patients. In addition, 147 people are waiting for a liver, 118 for one lung and 53 for a heart.
